Removing from Dormancy When you receive your selected bonsai seed, the first step is to wake the seed up. This release from dormancy is accomplished through a process called cold stratifying. Cold stratification can be accomplished in the home by placing your bonsai seed within in a sandwich bag. Moistened vermiculite is then placed within this bag at a ratio of 10 to 20 times vermiculite per seed. In addition, to prevent fungus, it is recommended that an antifungal solution be sprayed on the vermiculite. This bag is then placed in the crisper compartment of your refrigerator. Within two to three months this awakening process should be complete and ready for the next step. Preparing the Soil Bonsai Nursery Four Tips to Keep in Mind When Selecting a Bonsai Nursery You are intrigued by the concept of a bonsai tree. Perhaps the thought of a miniature tree within your home ..... The bonsai seed is now ready for germination. After undergoing the recommended period of cold stratification in your refrigerator the seeds can be removed and sprayed with an antifungal solution prior being sown. The prepared bonsai seed is then ready to be placed in the potting soil contained in a potting bed or single pot. The soil should not be compacted but should be loose within the bed or pot. This will allow for the air to circulate within the soil and prevent the growth of fungus. Germinating The prepared bonsai seed is now ready to be planted into the soil to begin germination. This seed should lie within the soil at a level of one quarter to one half inches; the depth of the planted seed should be deeper if the resulting bonsai tree will be planted outdoors. This range should be an additional one-quarter inch to each end of the spectrum. If this germination process begins in the springtime, it is better accomplished outdoors. Keeping a watchful eye upon your seeds, gently push the seeds back into the soil if they surface. In regards to watering keep the soil watered evenly and never soaked, but always damp. Then sit back and marvel as your bonsai tree sprouts! |
